Spring Thunder on the Prairie: A Turkey Hunt at Larson Ranch

Spring Thunder on the Prairie A Turkey Hunt at Larson Ranch

Few hunting experiences compare to spring gobblers when combined with the wide-open landscapes of central South Dakota. At Larson Ranch LLC, that experience becomes something even more memorable, a blend of authentic ranch heritage, expansive habitat, and classic Midwestern turkey hunting at its finest.

Located along the south side of the White River, Larson Ranch stretches across Tripp and Lyman counties where thousands of acres of native prairie grasslands, shelterbelts, cropland, and carefully managed wildlife food plots create ideal habitat not only for wild turkeys but also for deer, upland birds, and other prairie species.

For hunters looking to experience true Great Plains hunting, the ranch stands out as one of the most genuine destinations in South Dakota.

On a recent spring morning three experienced hunters — Jim, Matt, and Tom — stepped into the quiet South Dakota chill carrying decoys and gear. Early light revealed the landscape: stretches of native grass bending in the wind, cottonwood-lined draws, hills and bluffs carved over centuries. This mix of open prairie and rugged river country is textbook turkey habitat. Merriam’s and Rio Grande–type birds thrive here, roosting in tall trees along waterways before flying down to feed in open fields and grasslands at sunrise.

The men picked their spot and put out decoys. Excitement ratched up as multiple toms sounded off, their gobbles drifting down to them. Soon a flock appeared, working steadily toward the hunters’ setup. Everything looked perfect.

Until a hen let out a sudden alarm and spooked the flock, leaving the hunters watching opportunity drift away.

But turkey hunting rewards patience.

Not long afterward, a lone tom approached Matt’s decoy spread. Drawn by curiosity and territorial instinct, a classic spring behavior, the bird closed the distance.

Matt made the shot.

“Always a great time here in South Dakota! Thank you for letting us enjoy your amazing property… It’s much appreciated!” — Matt

The day was off to a strong start.

As temperatures rose and the prairie warmed under a bright sky, the hunters adjusted tactics. Another key element of successful turkey hunting. Mid-morning often finds toms searching for hens after early breeding activity fades, making it an ideal time to move, call sparingly, and set up again.

Jim, Matt, and Tom split up and began walking east from the main field, spreading out across the ranch’s diverse terrain.

It was one of those perfect South Dakota mornings with blue sky overhead, meadowlarks calling from fence posts, and the vast openness reminding hunters why prairie country feels so timeless.

At 9:45 AM, patience paid off again.

Two toms appeared, strutting confidently into Tom’s decoy spread. The birds committed fully, offering a clean opportunity. Moments later, the hunt was complete, with all three hunters able to claim a prize.

“.As I was carrying out my bird I thought about the wonderful legacy of this land and the Larson family. I hunt Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin and this spot. None of the others compare to the Larson Ranch THANK YOU for sharing your piece of heaven with us.” — Tom

“Although I was not successful the first day of the hunt, my 30 years of experience on the Larson Ranch left me confident in my ultimate success.” – Jim

On day two Jim decided to try a different location that had proved productive in the past. Sure enough, after watching a number of hens and Jakes come up from the bottom, a beautiful Tom emerged into the cornfield and met his maker.

“I’ve hunted turkey’s in seven states and Mexico. The Larson Ranch has always been my favorite turkey hunting location.” – Jim

Turkey hunting success depends heavily on habitat diversity, and Larson Ranch delivers exactly that. The combination of river corridors, shelterbelts, cropland edges, and native prairie creates:

  • Secure roosting areas along wooded river bottoms
  • Open feeding grounds for morning and midday movement
  • Natural travel corridors through draws and grasslands
  • Low hunting pressure across expansive acreage

These conditions allow hunters to experience classic spot-and-setup hunting rather than crowded public-land competition.

Add in the dramatic scenery with rolling prairie merging into rugged river breaks, and every hunt feels like stepping into a living postcard of the American West.
